Thanks for the practical post, describing this real-world migration. Sounds like you effectively seized the opportunity to edit your content before moving it. That said, I think there is a place for automated scripts as well -- for instance, if a site already has highly-vetted content (for example, a peer-reviewed journal) then it would not need to be (and should not be) edited. Also, as a site gets larger there will probably be more content that does get traffic than can be realistically edited (a 100,000 page site for example).

Good post. Couple of things I'd add:
1) pages that are viewed infrequently *could* be due to existing poor navigation structure, and so low visits does not automatically mean redundant content
2) redirection of existing URLs to new ones is essential if inbound links and Google's ranking/searches aren't going to break.

Thanks for this Alice. I'm working on a different kind of project - using social media to inform and engage people in infrastructure (water/sewer, airport extension) projects that aren't quite as "sexy" as "winning Boris' millions." Your case study, however, gives me a number of good ideas and "headings" to help frame our strategy. Also, congrats on what sounds like a very successful campaign!

Hi Alice,

I'm just putting together a research proposal for Leeds Business School - it will focus on use of social media by local govt. I've identified some thought leaders on this area - would you be willing to take part in the research (likely to be a 30 mins interview).

Kind regards

Alice this is a great case study. Thanks so much for sharing it. I am always on the look out for good examples of social media being used positively for engaging citizens.
