Day 2 of Everest/ Gokyo trek – Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Over dinner the night before I’d declared I was going to “do my damnedest to keep up” – and I did!

We’d read in the book that after we reached Monzo/ Monjo, where you get your permits checked, there was going to be a steep climb that would take anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours depending on fitness. Based on my experience in Annapurna I assumed this mean about 3 hours for me!

It was a 700 metre climb to the dizzy heights of Namche Bazaar at 3,400m but those nine days of ‘training’, as Josh put it, in the Annapurna region must have paid off because after 1 hour and 3 minutes of steady climb and a few handfuls of Haribo as fuel we made it to the top. Hooray!!

I’d set myself a target of walking for a full 10 minutes uphill before stopping for a water break so as to get a bit of rhythm going and Rob was timing me to make sure. He later admitted, as I suspected, that he’d been lengthening these to more like 15 minutes at a go proving I could do more than I thought. This increased fitness of mine still didn’t stop the porters from laughing out loud at me as I sweated my way up the hill! I’m still not sure exactly what was so funny…
