We learnt a lesson today – one that we probably should have figured out in Delhi when we rocked up at the Red Fort on a Sunday afternoon: don’t try and sightsee on a weekend in India, and especially not after lunch!
So naive. At 2pm along we went to Udaipur’s city palace.
This is in fact peak Indian tourist time – and unless you have sharp elbows and a strong constitution it is most likely you will be swallowed alive by one of the 30- to 40-strong family groups as they whizz through the sights.
But with only one day in Udaipur and having already paid our entrance fee we decided to just find a comfortable bench and wait for the mayhem to subside. It didn’t take too long…
After exploring the palace we headed for the nearest rooftop restaurant serving cold beer and settled down to watch the sun set over the lake. Much more relaxing (though admittedly less cultural)!
